Does God really care about the desires of our heart?
I’ve been blogging for a few years now and realised that this space has been predominantly about my artistic inclination to makeup and my passion for travelling; but that alone is probably not a wholistic expression of who I am as a person. I was giving it some thought and felt like it’s probably time to express my true self in a wholistic manner, share my personal stories, my faith, my family, real life experiences, interesting life lessons, great times, some not so good times and paths that make me who I am. Oh what a pleasure it is to share more about how Jesus is the corner stone of my life through it all!!
So, Does God really desire to fulfil our desires? He Absolutely does! He truly desires to bless you far beyond what you can think or imagine!!
If He probably doesn’t care about our desires, He wouldn’t have put this beautiful scripture in His living word..
Delight yourself in the Lord and He will fulfil the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:4
Growing up, this used to be one of my favourite verses from the Bible. Every time I read this verse, It instantly filled me with a hope that Jesus is looking into my heart’s thoughts and desires. I just love the very thought that our hearts lay bare and open before His eyes. He sees our every sigh, our every hurt, our secrets, our longings, our motives, our sins, our scars and our hopes. And the joy of .. Wow, He is going to give me what I desire for…but does God really give you “everything” that you desire? In the “time” and “manner” that you desire? Probably not. As much as I found it difficult to fathom this verse through some disappointments and paths that left my heart with many questions.. The Holy Spirit, Our Great teacher, has been revealing to my heart about some of these kingdom secrets of understanding the “Heart of God”. God’s thoughts are far higher and different from Man’s thoughts! That’s why it’s important to look at the verse in its wholistic context.
Here’s the actual context of the verse…
“Trust in the LORD and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him and He will do this: He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun. Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him” (Psalm 37:5-7a, NIV)
With this context in mind, it sounds more like the entire emphasis is laid on the “Intimate Relationship we can share with Jesus” and not on the desires that will eventually certainly follow as a result of the relationship we share with Him. The word clearly brings out the context of a two way relationship with God, like in any loving bond.. there are expectations you ought to fulfil, like “you trust Him fully ” “you do good” “Stay within the safe boundaries” “Tell Him all your concerns & Be still” “Don’t try to make your desires happen in your own might by yourself” “wait patiently” etc… I believe that emphasis is more on trusting in His unchanging love to stand for you, and our role is to simply commit all our thoughts and concerns openly and freely to Him, sharing a deep bond of trust & love.. to the extent that He will ensure to takes up your case and makes sure you are provided with Justice for every injustice you face! A love that cares, protects and fights for you!! Oh what unexplainable, overwhelming love of God❤️
We often tend to overlook the first half of the verse. What does He mean by “Delight yourself in me?” To me, It reads more like… “Seek your happiness in Me, and I will give you your heart’s desire”-Profound!
How do we seek our happiness in Him? What do we do when we fall in love with someone? Do we realise that our hearts are created to experience and long for intimacy? I remember the time when I met this man in college and fell in love with my husband, we would have this constant desire to spend infinite amount of time with each other..I would long to just get to know his heart, to know what is on his mind, his thoughts, his character, his likes, his dislikes, his sense of humour, his stories, what makes him happy, what ticks him off, his values in life, the toughest paths of his life, his failures and his deepest secrets. Laying our hearts bare to each other brought forth such deep emotional intimacy. I began to love everything about him. To please him or to bring a smile on his face and to be with him was my biggest desire. Literally.. I knew I was in love with him when his struggles felt like my struggles, his battles were mine too, he was my happiness, my heart, my everything! I fell in love with his beautiful heart and the way He loved me made me so confident that he was worth the trust I invested in him. I knew with such strong conviction that he will not let me down, that he take care of me even when I wasn’t thinking of myself, He was not like any other man I’ve ever met, I trusted that he loves me like I am his very own and would never ever hurt me. This trust was strong in me because I knew of his relationship with Jesus, I knew that the values by which he made decisions were drawn from the word of God, I knew he was a man who will not compromise on righteousness and will love his wife; the way Christ taught him to love… and most importantly, I loved the way he always reads my heart and helps me be a better person and always enriched my relationship with Jesus..
The point I’m trying to make here is, When you know someone intimately, you become “One” with that person and it kind of becomes normal for you to be able to tell what’s on their heart as well..
When we are able to experience such an emotional bond with a human being who is limited and flawed like our own selves, Imagine what it would feel like to share the truest bond of intimacy with the creator of your very own heart???
When we delight or find joy in spending time Jesus, deeply pondering, meditating and investing time to know His heart, His thoughts and His will; it’s the beginning of an intimate relationship with the maker of your heart.. it makes my heart and soul overflow with love for Him. This creates an unstoppable, unquenchable, urge to please His heart. To love everything that He loves and refrain from everything that might displease Him. That’s the magical moment in your spirit, when our desires will be lost in His desires, when our deepest desires suddenly gets in line with His thoughts, His ways, His laws and His purpose and will for our lives.
Some of these experiences are beyond what words can express. You truly have to experience it to know what I mean….
What I have realised is that when my desire gets in line with the thoughts and desires in God’s heart for me; In other words, When His delight is my delight, Then I see the fulfilment of a Supernatural Spiritual connection of how the actual heavenly desires that were birthed in the heart of God for me, before the foundations of the earth or even before He formed me in my mother’s womb is now being transferred and birthed directly into my own heart now in the present, when I linger in His presence and will certainly come to pass in our lives! Far beyond what you can think or imagine!
Does this mean that He is going to give you only what He wants to give you and will discard something that you may desire and long for??.. No! it only means that because He loves us way too much to withhold anything good from us, He will bless us with everything that is better than we can even want for our own selves. Like a father loves His child, it’s the desire of our Heavenly Father to make our hearts happy by giving us what we ask for. But it only means that it is us, who lack in full understanding of the extent of His protective love that sometimes, He is rather “protecting” us by not giving us some of the things that we ask for, in the “time” that we ask for and the “manner” that we ask for…
If you are burdened, confused or feel heavy in your heart about some aspect of your life with questions and constantly seeking God, for Him to do things your way… I lovingly urge you to see things through His eyes and submit to His love..
Ever since I’ve learnt this beautiful kingdom secret, my prayer has always been…
“Lord help me to always understand that completely surrendering to your loving plan, fully trusting that you love and care for my life more than anyone can ever care; and simply enjoying your lovely presence will bring life’s best for me”
I encourage each one of you reading this to have an unshakable trust and confidence in God’s love for you and His faithful commitment to fulfil His beautiful plans for your life.
Warm Hugs and prayers,
